"alef" is the first letter in the Persian alphabet and it is a long vowel.
It has three forms. Medial form and final form are the same and it never connects to the next letter.
It is pronounced like the "a" sound drawn out about twice as long. When it follows an emphatic consonant, it sounds like the "a" in "tall".
When it follows the letter ل " lama", the two letters take on a special combination form like this لا .
Alef can also appear with special diacritic marks and can be pronounced as اَ "a", اِ"e" and ُا "o" which we will discuss in short vowel lesson. |
