Isfahan is located south of Tehran and it’s the capital of Isfahan province. It is the third-largest city in Iran, after Mashhad and Tehran and one of the most important architectural centers in the Islamic world for its Perso–Islamic architecture, grand boulevards, covered bridges, palaces, tiled mosques, and minarets. Isfahan also has many historical buildings, monuments, paintings, and artifacts.
The fame of Isfahan led to the Persian proverb “Esfahān nesf-e-jahān ast”: Isfahan is half (of) the world. Because of its unmatched beauty and historic ambiance, Isfahan is called “Half the World” as dubbed for the first time by French poet Renier who visited this city in the 16th century. The Naqsh-e Jahan Square in Isfahan is one of the largest city squares in the world. Iran is the host of twenty-three UNESCO world heritage sites. Three out of five of these sites in Isfahan province are located in Isfahan city.
